For me, the best little corner of the city is pretty much north of 10th street, south of 14th, between Piedmont and Peachtree. I used to live there and really loved it.

North Avenue can be hit or miss (I used to live in the Ga State Village, which I think are now Tech dorms), but I would personally avoid it. Too busy, and not the good kind of busy. Go north a little bit onto one of the quiet(er) side streets.

It's amazing to me that you can pick just about any street or neighborhood in Atlanta and some urban pioneer or another will tell you it's perfectly safe. I don't know if it's wishful thinking or they just have an incredibly high tolerance for homeless people, drugs, and criminal activity. Personally, if I was going to generalize, I'd never live anywhere south of 10th unless maybe (a BIG maybe) it was directly on Peachtree. There are just too many spotty areas around there for my liking. I'd rather not have to pick my routes based on safety and continually look over my shoulder at night.

Looks like Midtown is getting ready to lower the boom on aggravated prostitution. I guess a certain amount of this is inevitable with urbanization but if you let it go unchecked the quality of life will eventually suffer.

Quote:
The most aggravating aspect of the nightly infliction by the trans prostitute gang is that they are perpetrating their criminal activity in a residential area. It is one thing that prostitutes go to a non-residential area to practice their trade, but endangering people at and around their homes is beyond unacceptable. Folks deserve to feel safe in their homes, and prostitutes and their johns undermine this.

In Georgia, other criminal offenses are given enhanced punishments when it involves a residence. For example, burglary of a home is punishable with up to 20 years imprisonment while burglary of a non-residential structure is punishable by a maximum of 5 years on first offense. Also, picketing at someone’s home is usually prohibited by law and does not come under first amendment. Why? People have the right to live in peace and safety in their homes. Because of its highly criminogenic nature and the way it endangers residents, we strongly feel that street prostitution in a residential area should carry a heavier criminal liability than it currently does.

The shelter isn't in Midtown

Really, so you wouldn't live in Plaza Midtown? It's south of 10th, and not on Peachtree. Man, the Publix there is REALLY unsafe, and don't even think about setting foot in J.Christophers for breakfast! You will be mugged for sure. Well, it will be a coffee mug. But still. And watch out for all of those dangerous Georgia Tech students.

Anyway, you're willfully ignorant if you think "south of 10th" is categorically unsafe.

^There are some shifty looking characters over by the Marta station now and then although I've walked to/from there at 5AM dozens of times w/o getting hassled. Have lived @ 7th & Peachtree for ~5 yrs now w/o anything more than a hobo shouting some racist stuff at me. There's definitely more to be done but as they keep building towers in this area, I think it's only getting safer.

Pretty sure the greatest crime to most people in that area is getting ParkAtlanta tickets or a boot from trying to sneak off from SBX lot.

??? How about the Spire building on Peachtree at 8th St. I have never seen a time--day or night--when there were not a ton of folks out and about, eating outside at the restaurants in front of that building/intersection. It reminds me of Chelsea, NYC. For reals, I don't know how much safer a city can be than this area.

It's wonderful to see how Atlanta's business community and many private foundations and generous individuals have once again stepped up to fund this museum.

To a large degree they are what makes this city tick.

I'm moving to Ponce (Camden Midtown apartments) and that area is pretty nice. It's a couple of blocks away from the North Ave station and close to things like Peachtree, Georgia Tech, and Piedmont Park (about a twenty minute walk). I am also getting a great view of the skyline and skyscrapers from my second floor apartment windows.
