There's a special place in hell for people who would do this to a child.

Sickening. I am waiting for them to reveal where she attended school and whether teachers/administrators noticed any problems. If the child was starving to death, one would think that someone would notice.

CMMon, noticing and caring enough to do something about it are, unfortunately, two different things to too many people. Truly sickening.

I saw that story on the news. I don't have words. It's just horrible.

Her father and step-mom look insane on their mug shots, and they damn sure didn't look like they ever missed a meal. What kind of sick, twisted **** could intentionally starve a child to death?

I wonder how they ended up with custody in the first place. The grandmother and mother looked normal, although I will say the mother's reaction on camera seemed a bit detached to me.

Well, but schools are mandated by law to report suspected cases of abuse/neglect. Someone from the school (usually the school counselor) could face prosecution if they failed to report. So, in that case, they HAVE to do something if they have reason to suspect.

Now, if the school reported and DFCS didn't intervene, that's a different story. If the grandmother is to be believed, DFCS knew this family and there had already been another case involving the same child in 2010.

Sadly, family members and teachers at Emani's school were aware of the abuse AND alerted DFACS to it. DFACS did nothing. I don't know how they can live with themselves over whatever procedural bull**** excuse they used to keep her away from her so-called father and step-mother. Sign a petition to hold DFCS accountable | 11alive.com

This story makes me really, really sad. Even sadder is the fact that there are thousands of children who don't get the help they need because of how f-ed up DFACS is. This needs to be a top priority for the Governor and Legislature.

I still am reeling from the lack of inaction on the parties involved. They could not have been THAT oblivious. She had obviously sent out cries for help repeatedly.
