Not sure if this has already been posted.

Anyone read the book? Seems like this is the general narrative about Atlanta.

Why cul-de-sacs are bad for your health: Happy City by Charles Montgomery.

Well, to be fair that's the narrative of the Atlanta suburbs. The author paints intown Atlanta in a positive light.

And the narrative in many, if not most, suburban areas of major U.S. cities.

Anyone can take one element out of millions and use that to justify an overly broad conclusion. Any of us could do the same with any other part of metro Atlanta. This is simply a meaningless pseudo analysis.

This article speaks well to me! After 30 years of living in the City of Atlanta, the relative isolation I have encountered in suburbia is still a nagging problem for me after over 3 years of living well OTP.
Speaking for myself, I decry the lack of sidewalks in my subdivision & also the lack of interconnectivity between it & nearby subdivisions. The nearest sidewalk is about 1/3 of a mile away & one end of it concludes at a nearby school.
Funny timing here though in how this article taps right into my general disdain for cul de sac style development & poor planning. As I rode the Xpress bus in this morning, I was reworking the street scape in my minds eye as we rolled along.
Just call me a supressed urban planner I guess...and a longtime walker & former runner who will never be fat.

Okay, I'm interested, why are you insulted? The article simply points out the obvious - that for many suburban communities the way infrastructure (and land uses) was/is laid out prohibits walkability and other forms of transportation.

I took it as a general incrimination of everything suburban. I simply find that unjust. Perhaps I read too much into what the guy was saying, but the whole ITP / OTP discussions on this board are pretty balkanized. When I get a sense that folks cannot seem to be balanced in their views on the two areas because of one or a small number of issues but ignoring just as many issues in their own backyards, well, that makes me somewhat irate.

Perhaps I'm being a bit sensitive. I dunno...
