Why are the children having to do the work? Why aren't the parents being asked to contribute in some form of labor?

Or, rather, if they can't afford a school lunch, they can bring their own lunch like all the OTHER kids whose parents can't afford to pay for the lunch. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple, a cookie, and maybe buy a milk. A jar of peanut butter, loaf of bread, jelly, some apples, a package of cookies would cost much less than paying for school lunch -- and will probably get eaten, instead of some of the muck they try to pass off as food in some cafeterias.

Kids can't learn if they are hungry.

No. If we are going to have kids sweep floors, all of them should do it, not just poor kids.

Lord, help. In many cases, THEY CAN'T. Like someone else said up-thread, for far too many of these kids, this is the ONLY meal that they get, period.

Why not just swipe from Swift's A Modest Proposal and go all out and use the poor kids as free food for all the other children?

JK is one of two things: 1) an imbecile too stupid to think and talk at the same time; or 2) a conceited moron with no humility.

We could solve these problems if people stopped having children they cannot afford. And please don't say it is hard to get contraception or an abortion. There are plenty of places in Georgia that give out free condoms. (and you can also get a free abortion if you are low income)

How much welfare do you get for having a baby?

Where in Georgia can a low-income woman get an abortion for free? Texas has pretty much outlawed abortion. These same political leaders in these red states that want to do with social welfare programs are also trying to outlaw abortion. They don't want poor people getting assistance, but they are also against these same people getting abortions. They can't have it both ways. It's also ironic that red states have the highest poverty levels.

Not much. Welfare recipients typically get less than $300 in cash total per month. And the years of getting more money for each child have long gone. Could you survive on less than $300 per month? I doubt it. This notion that people on welfare are getting a lot of money is just that--a notion, and a myth.

However, I agree that people should not have kids if they can't afford it. Kids are expensive and having them when you are low-income is what keeps people trapped in poverty.
