Atlanta really needs more casinos. If we can use some of the tax dollars to further fund higher education, just think where we'll be. The lottery worked wonders for HOPE. In April we moved the revenue from video gambling from the Department of Revenue to the Georgia Lottery(which funds HOPE scholarship)

Chef - Casinos are not legal to operate in Georgia. Why? Because our governor and legislature are run, for the most part, by very conservative folks who operate as much on what they perceive to be religious principals as anything else. The controlling folks believe that casinos foment crime, prostitution, etc. and just are not "good" for the populace. I realize that this is a bit oxymoronic given that we have a lottery and some video gaming, but I am afraid that until Georgia becomes a bit more blue, casinos will not be permitted by the state, despite very strong efforts by businesses to do otherwise.

This is just a knee jerk reaction, but to me, casinos seem to be most appropriate for places that don't have anything else to offer.

I'm not saying we can't make some money off this, but I'm just not in love with the idea.

I would however, love a horse track with betting. There is something more classy about that than a casino full of video monitors.

There were efforts over the years to turn Underground into a casino complex. I think that concept fits well within your axiom that casinos are most appropriate for places that don't have anything else to offer. Horse racing though? I'm one of those bleeding heart PETA supporting folks who would argue that isn't a good thing...

I really don't think a casino at underground is going to do the area any favors. Sure, more people will be there. But I don't think anybody outside of gambling addicted chain smokers will be hanging out at the Atlanta Casino @ Underground Atlanta. It doesn't come across as an appealing destination to me. Especially if it solely video gambling.

Is horse racing inherently bad for the horses? I dunno, I don't want to hurt animals or anything. Ive only been a few times in Houston.

I think that in the elite ranks of horse racing, it's not bad for the animals barring an unfortunate accident when the animal needs to be put down. My main concern, is that would lead to dog racing, which, generally is not good; thus, all of the greyhound rescue organizations all over Florida and other places where it is allowed.

LOL casinos at undergrad. Now all the GSU students can blow away financial aid on casinos rather than weed bought from Peidmont North's dining hall. It would be a plus since GSU's average campus age is 25, more eligibles. The homeless would flock as well.

Yeah Ansley, I guess you're right. Thankfully, America is becoming less religious. Hopefully the religious nuts will die soon. Speaking of which, UGA should revoke Paul Broun's degree. GRU too.

I mean seriously, Alabama thinks its ok but Georgia is too pious?

ZELL MILLER Y U NO LEAVE US AN HEIR. Protect us from right wing nutjobs and the liberal nanny state.

Why are you bringing up religion? Georgia too pious? Name me an city in the US where there are (non-indian) casinos that you would consider a world class city?

Vegas? I guess. I would consider it gaudy and built on stupidity , the strip that is, not the whole city.

I see casino as a last ditch, low class addition to a city.
