My family and I are moving to the Marietta area due to my new job. We are looking in the Sandy Plains??? area, which is close to Piedmont Rd maybe??? I have an 11 month old as well so we are going to have to find a pre-school for her. Any suggestions for that or comments in general about the area???

Thanks

Yes, the area is East Cobb and it is safe, nice, but not particularly inexpensive. Marietta is pretty large so where would you be commuting to in Marietta? Piedmont can get pretty congested heading south towards 120 in the morning and 120 heading east can be a nightmare as well. If you're headed in the opposite directions, it makes the drive much easier.

East Cobb is somewhat well know for its school system so while I don't have a recommendation for a preschool, I'm sure you'll make out fine.

NewDad_32, what criteria do you have for your choice of East Cobb? There are many options in Cobb county around Marietta.
Please provide us the following info so we can better guide you.
1. Budget
2. House/Condo/Townhome? (rent/own?)
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home)
4. Children(public school vs. private).
- you said 11 month old, any others?
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.

East Cobb is a really good area for kids, but it's kind of past its prime. In my opinion it looks sort of ratty and worn out...like furniture that was really classy and nice in the 70's, but definitely shows its age today. The area has not aged well, but it was one of the region's first experiments with suburban sprawl and it worked out well.

West Cobb on the other hand is an easier commute down 75 if you're working in Atlanta and is a lot newer and on the up-and-up in terms of growth. Everything looks and feels really new and polished.

I'd recommend initially renting a home so you can get a feel for the area. Even NW Atlanta / Cobb is a big market. Without questions answered yet, areas I'd look at are: West Cobb, Powder Springs, East Cobb, Smyrna, Marietta city limits itself near Kennessaw Mtn, Acworth, and Woodstock

If you answer the questions above, we can give you more advice. It'll be good if you're really specific on the exact location you work (street / closest intersection)

If you have school-age kids, I'd actually suggest initially renting a home in a good school district in any of the above so you can really look around. If not, then you should probably focus on areas where you'd be going by some preschool on the way to work.

Interesting. I am very happy in my well established neighborhood with mature trees, well-built homes, excellent schools, 5 minutes from Whole Foods and Trader Joe's and great non-chain restaurants like Seed, 10 minutes from historic Roswell, less than 15 to Chatahoochee National Forest hiking etc. I am sure that West Cobb is a nice place to live. "New and polished" is not what everyone is looking for. The housing market here currently IMO is evidence that it has aged quite well.

Area is ok. You should consider the next school district over (tritt, walton). The houses will be more expensive and you could have more of a commute. However, the schools are supposed to be fantastic so wanted to mention it.

Also, 11 month old will be daycare, not pre-school. I can not recommend Sandy Plains Baptist Church highly enough. They are some of the most fantastic people I have ever met. I had all 3 of my kids there at one point.
