Congressman Scott: Clayton MARTA vote could revive Macon to Atlanta commuter line - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Quote:
Developments in Clayton County are rekindling interest in commuter rail from Atlanta to Macon, despite Georgia’s losing access to $45 million in federal funds for the project, reports WABE.
The Federal Transit Administration alerted the Georgia Department of Transportation on July 1 about the loss of the grant, WABE reports. The FTA made the decision after the state was not, over the course of a decade, able to provide matching funds, the station adds.
Congressman David Scott, who had helped secure the $45 million (pending the state’s match), says the recent decision by Clayton County officials to ask residents to vote in November to raise the local sales tax by one percent for MARTA service could provide a big boost to the larger rail project.
Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Natalie Dale said discussing new funds for the Macon line is premature with Clayton’s ballot measure still months away, WABE reports.
But Dale anticipates the topic being discussed more as GDOT updates the state’s long-term rail plan. “Public input” sessions on the plan are being held later this month, WABE adds.
