I may be moving to the Atlanta area within the next 6 months. I have a 20 year old Autistic/Epilpetic daughter. How long can she attend public school and is there a public school for her age? Where we currently live she can attend until she's 22. What area would be good to live in? I will be looking for full time work once she is settled. The budget for rent is $2000 per month or less.

I am a graphic designer. My husband works in downtown Atlanta in the finance field. He's just recently moved there and is not familiar with the area. His long hours make it difficult to get these types of answers. I will also be looking for a live in nanny. Any recommendations for that would be appreciated as well.

Thank you so much!

Check out Georgia department of education and special education link. I think the age is 21 but it's been awhile. We live in rural Alaska and found Au Pair Jobs | Be an Au Pair | Hire an Au Pair > GreatAuPair.com as a great place to hire an au pair

21 -- but I think it is until her 22nd birthday. And GA has really poor services for disabled adults. You are going to have spend a ton of time getting services in place for her.

do you have a sense of what her next phase looks like?

Yes, it's through the last day of age 21.
Check out Atlanta Job Corps, Roosevelt Warm Springs, Tommy Nobis Center. If those aren't a good fit, they might be able to direct you to other services.

A group home looks like her next phase I am ashamed to say.

That is nothing to be ashamed about. Well-run group homes can be fabulous places for adults with disabilities. Poorly run ones are another story entirely.

Reach out to Jewish Family and Career Services -- you don't have to be Jewish at all -- and learn about the services they offer. They do a terrific job.

(the webpage seems to be down, at least for me, but I am sure it will be up soon.)

They run a really terrific day program and I think they operate some group homes.
