If you haven't heard, the Webber Group (led by Chris Webber) has expressed interest in becoming the majority owner of the Atlanta Hawks.

Personally, I'm not impressed with that idea. So my question is, does anyone have any ideas of who they would like to see become sole owner (rather than a group or majority owner, but at least majority owner) of the Hawks???

I have a few ideas............

Bernie Marcus - Home Depot/Georgia Aquarium
Tyler Perry - Tyler Perry Studios
Jermaine Dupri - So So Def
Ted Turner - Time Warner
Summerfield K. Johnston Jr. - Coca Cola
Arthur Blank - Home Depot/Atlanta Falcons
Helmut Lademacher - LHS Group
James Kennedy - Cox Cable
Dominique Wilkins - Atlanta Hawks
any others?

I would like to see them owned by a consortium of fans who are everyday people.

Sell $3000 subscriptions to 25,000 people and you should have enough money. You could even have 1/3 shares for $1000.

They could elect a board of directors who would then select management and players.

Let the fans rule, instead of letting it be a billionaires club.

whats wrong with potentially having Chris Webber (and his group) as the owner of the Hawks? I'm not trying to start an argument, just wondering as I don't know much about him aside from his playing days, and his current position as commentator / analyst for NBA on TNT.

Ted Turner was the owner way back in the day he brought them to the city and the braves. Tell you the truth I like

Chris Webber and his group
Arthur Blank
Dominique Wilkins
Bernie Marcus

not really fond of tyler perry or Jermaine Dupri he should've tried back in early 2000s

If the fans are providing the facility and paying for the tickets, why shouldn't they be in charge? And why shouldn't they be the ones to reap the profits?

It seems like the fans would be a lot more in touch with what they want than some out of town billionaire or a local entertainer.

I wonder would love to see this as a requirement for any team that benefits from any form of public funding.

At the very least they should have direct representation on the board of directors equivalent to the public contribution, and in no case less than 35%.

Nothing is "wrong" with Chris Webber's group. Just asking the question if you'd rather see anyone else.
When you say "Chris Webber," the name doesn't really just SAY "Atlanta" the way Ted Turner and Arthur Blank do. I know neither are native Atlantans, so there should be no difference, however they DO mean more to Atlanta. If you take Braves & Falcons away from Turner's & Blank's resumes, they are STILL Atlanta icons thru Turner Broadcasting and Home Depot.
Chris Webber is just another NBA player that has chosen Atlanta as home. One among hundreds.
Not mad at the Webber Group idea. Just would be nice to have that "I LOVE Atlanta & will do whatever to see them win" guy as sole owner like we did back when Ted owned the Braves (and what seems to me that we have in Blank with the Falcons right now).

Letting the fans own an NBA team sounds really good until there is a capital call. Now Mr Joe The Plumber needs to come up with 5k due player and staff salaries because they didn't meet projected sales revenues for the year.
