I live in Peachtree City and our firm has a couple of clients in Duluth and Buford. It requires me to drive up there for a week every month and I was wondering if anyone has any traffic tips getting there or back. I usually try to be up there around 8:30 and we leave out around 5:00 everyday. I have noticed that if I go I-285 in the morning it only gets bad around the Stone Mountain exits (granted it is usually at a standstill then). And coming home it is normally a toss up between going through downtown or taking I-285, which again is not horrible, once you actually can get on it. Any thoughts???

P.s. I am only asking because I am new to the Atl area in general, so I may be going the only reasonable way there is, just wanting to make sure.

Thanks

I think your best bet is to use an app like Waze and just try to avoid problems wherever they crop up.

At least it's a reverse commute, but that only helps so much. I would think that it would generally be better to take I-285 around the city than the connector through it under normal circumstances, but I've never actually made that commute, thankfully.

I would take 285 around. The worst part is usually just at 85. I remember year ago 285S backed up at 20 but it seems like that's no longer the case. Traffic always slows down on 85 from 400 south to 20. Unless you like slowly seeing the city, I would take 285 in the afternoon. Not too sure about the morning.

Jump off at Memorial Drive or 78, take it over to Mountain Industrial and take MIB to 85 or turn onto 29/Lawrenceville Hwy and cutover on any of the various streets (Rockbridge, Killian Hill, Beaver Ruin to 85) and drive the rest of the way. It will save you delay of the merger to 85.

In the evening, it will be quicker to come down on 285. You just need to get on below Memorial Drive because prior to that, it is bumper to bumper. 85 South usually jams from North Druid Hills through downtown until around 166 or so.

You could take Highway 20 in Buford to Scenic Highway (124) and take 138 through Henry County to Fayette. It may be longer going the back way but its another option for you, in case of traffic problems.

I second the recommendation for Waze, it's probably saved me 20-30 hours of driving time this year alone. Its arrival times are extremely accurate.
