Awesome! but that would be nearly 9000 miles and over a 19 hour flight....sadly.

If we got a flight that long, I'd take Singapore first. Lots of good connections and they are also one of the top nations Georgia exports goods too, so we have a pretty good trade business. The connections from there to Austrailia are pretty easy too.

Possibly since Qantas fly from Dallas Fort Worth to Australia, surely a new generation type airplane could make the trip to and from Atlanta.

They just started A380 service on DFW to SYD...means a Delta Boeing 777-200LR could probably make the extra distance from ATL if given slightly lighter load. Singapore Airlines used to do Newark/Singapore on an A340 which is at the limits of its range.

Think the economics just don't work though. A380 can pile 484 people on a single trip and pull in tons of people from the midwest already. It'd be tough to line up ~300 people daily from the southeast to fill up a flight that long. Not sure how the economics of the Johannesburg flight work today for Delta on the 777.

Qantas bumps out Delta for longest flight to depart USA

I'd say a 787 could make it and the smaller plane could make it profitable but Delta's orders are pushed out to 2020 and it seems like they'd probably use it to make Seattle/Asia to more smaller locations to cut down transfers in Narita.

Edit. Was thinking of this just from the Delta perspective but it's possible if some enterprising Asian/Australian airline wanted to serve up their 787, they could definitely make it happen. I still find it amazing that Delta's Mumbai flight didn't work out. Seems like that would have been a great target market given how difficult is for some of my colleagues to get home.

Not sure of what the implications would be. Flying to LA first is no big deal. The distance is about the flight range of present day planes so hopefully flights wouln't have much headwinds.
