Metro Atlanta maintained its position as a hub for Fortune 500 headquarters with 16 companies, according to the latest 2021 ranking from Fortune Magazine.

Next year, Atlanta and Georgia will add another Fortune 500 company – Norfolk Southern, which is currently based in Virginia and is building its new corporate headquarters in Midtown..."

Atlanta and GA hits pretty hard for its population size. I always like to look at it relative to NC since they are so similar in population and demographics. I imagine cities/states that compete best on technology, education and logistics will have the most success winning over and creating Fortune 500 HQs in the future.

Well it’s not quite apples to apples since NC has three other relatively large metros (Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, and Winston-Salem/Greensboro, which I know are technically two metros but used to be one and most people still consider them so). But overall I do agree. I think much of this can be attributed to three things:

1. The Airport/Delta Airlines
2. Coke
3. Political leadership which did a relatively good job of keeping divisive social issues at bay and out of the boardroom. Let’s all pray that this continues.

I see Fortune 500 companies as sort of the old-school way of measuring revenue and the rankings will be irrelevant soon since the technology age companies are taking over. I hope some of those companies are able to reinvent themselves to be relevant in the future.

Your comment raises a very significant point, which is that erstwhile Atlanta-based SunTrust bank did just what you are saying and made a very serious attempt at reinventing itself as a fintech (financial technology) company with a very heavy online banking presence by merging with with erstwhile Winston-Salem, NC-based BB&T bank.

The only problem for Atlanta, as the article mentions, was that the new bank that SunTrust and BB&T formed after their merger (Truist) is now based in Charlotte instead of being based in Atlanta.

Truist has a significant presence in Atlanta, but it is still not the same as having a major bank based and headquartered in one’s town.
