My spouse and I will be moving back to GA soon. One of us will be working in downtown and the other in Lawrenceville. We are looking for suggestions on areas to live for a fair commute. We will be renting an apartment for 6-12 months while we research areas and find a house to buy. Price is not a huge issue at this point. We are prepared to pay $1500/month in rent, if needed. Any suggestions so the commute is reasonable for both? We both will be working fairly traditional hours (8-6ish).

Would it be insane to live in Duluth/Gwinnett county and attempt to commute downtown during rush hour? Does the peach pass lane improve the commute significantly?

Let me know if more information is needed.

Thanks!

The express bus can get you downtown fast with not much traffic since the bus will be in the HOV/HOT lane

If I wanted to split the difference, I'd probably look at Brookhaven. You'd have to say a little more about the type of community where you wish to reside. I mean even Dunwoody near Perimiter Mall would not be a bad choice as far as location goes, but it would be a different living experience than Brookhaven. What other things are important to you and your spouse?

I have never lived north of Atlanta in the Interstate 85 corridor in Gwinnett, but family and friends in that community tell me the ONLY thing that could improve THAT commute (notice my use of a demonstrative adjective) is a magic wand or tele-porter. I know there are many wonderful things about Gwinnett (schools, diversity, a variety of housing choices and lifestyle options) but the commute is not among them. Other posters have thrown out Northern Dekalb options; I will, too. How about some of the "hyphenated" exits off of 85 north in Northern Dekalb County (Peachtree-Dunwoody, Chamblee-Dunwoody, etc) The neighborhoods are beautiful and leafy up that way, uncertain about availability of apartments.

Chamblee has some nice apartments that are close to MARTA stations, for downtown commute, and they could use Buford hwy or 85.

Based on your needs, I recommend looking in the Tucker/Northlake area for an apartment.

When you purchase a home, I recommend the Parkview High District in the South Lilburn/East Lilburn/Mountain Park area.

IF you decide to live near Lawrenceville you will need a Peach Pass and patience. Even if you live in Dekalb somewhere off 85 you'll have slow traffic from Clairmont to almost midtown.

Thanks for all of the input. We have decided to look into buying a home. Possibly the Norcross or Lilburn areas. Pros and cons to each? We are looking to spend 280-330k. Thanks again.
