I was recently reading some old news articles - and within these articles a couple of schools were mentioned that sort-of piqued my curiosity. After doing a bit of 'Net research, I determined/confirmed that these schools no longer exist (well, to the best of my knowledge). However, I'm curious about exactly where these schools were located - and if the buildings that housed these schools still exist. Perhaps someone(s) here have the answers. These schools are:

Moreland Elementary School - does anyone have an address of this now-defunct school? At first, I thought that a building at 1261 Caroline Street S.E. - a building that was converted into lofts - may have been the old Moreland Elementary - but I checked, and apparently, this building once housed a shoe factory.

Downtown Learning Center - from what I found, this school was located at 551 Houston St. N.E.. Well, Houston St. was changed to John Wesley Dobbs Avenue at some point. Have the street addresses of John Wesley Dobbs Ave. remained unchanged from the days when the street was named Houston St..? It gets sort-of confusing when you type "551 Houston St. N.E." into Google Maps. I wonder if the school was really at the location that Google Maps indicates:

Any info is appreciated - including anecdotes about the old Downtown Learning Center or Moreland Elementary School. TIA

There are a couple old buildings that used to be a school on Euclid right off Moreland (right in Little 5 Points). They are now lofts/apartments as well.

red92s is referring to Bass High School just west of Little Five Points on Euclid. I believe it was a functioning high school until the 1980's and Mary Lin Elementary temporarily relocated there during their long renovation in the early-mid 90's. I think they used Bass's gym for Olympic basketball practices if I remember correctly. You can still see old Tech High/ Okeefe High School on the edge of the Georgia Tech campus along the Downtown Connector. Always on the Tech campus, it was absorbed into the university years ago.

The last several decades Girls High was known as Roosevelt High (perhaps from 1948 on) It basically served the Grant Park Community and adjacent Ormewood Park and Woodland Hills (also north up Boulevard to Cabbage Town) . It was replaced by Southside High (Now Jackson High School) in the late 1970's or early 1980's. Present day Grady High School was the former site of Boys High School. If I am not mistaken, Atlanta went co-educational in 1948.

Tucker Elementary School. I attended there, but it closed when I was in 5th grade. The building is still there, but it's now the Tucker Recreation Center.

Spring Street School is now the Center for Puppetry Arts on Spring Street in Midtown. Go take a look quickly, as the new addition to the front of the school will completely encapsulate the original façade.

Kirkwood Elementary was converted to lofts. And the building nearby that used to be a public library is a private residence.
