That whole GICC area is hella underutilized. The transit connection is nice and will (hopefully) be bolstered further one day with a connection to a future commuter rail station. The D-league team seems like a bit of a waste though...

Will CP try and build a new urbanism, human scaled downtown in the area?

I know they would love to. They have been wanting to redevelop the former residential areas pushed out by runway noise for a while. There's probably 200+ acres for sale that they want to develop into an urban environment, not warehouses.

The vision is for a network of trails and bike paths connected across the hodgepodge of cities and counties in south Metro Atlanta — and connected to the Atlanta Beltline.

The idea is purely theoretical at this point. A $200,000 study of how such a trail system could be developed over the next five years is being funded by an Atlanta Regional Commission grant and matching funds from local governments on the southside.

Plan underway for network of trails around Atlanta airport

“The study will evaluate multimodal options, including rail transit and autonomous systems such as personal rapid transit, that offer the most efficient movement of people and goods within and even beyond the Aerotropolis area surrounding the airport,” according to a VHB press release.

One day, the project is also supposed to include a 200-plus-mile network of multi-use trails—not unlike the Beltline—connecting Hapeville, College Park, East Point, and Forest Park.

I've always been super excited about development in this area, especially Aerotropolis. When it gets done, I'm moving there, just to brag that I'm from AEROTROPOLIS.

The Aerotropolis Atlanta Community Improvement Districts (AACIDs), in partnership with their public and private sector partners, have launched a feasibility study to assess the potential of leveraging the region’s existing transit assets — and possibly creating new ones — to keep pace with the community’s evolving mobility needs.

One of the promising scenarios being considered, McDowell said, is the possible addition of new routes for the free, ATL SkyTrain. The automated rail system currently shuttles passengers between the airport’s domestic terminal, the offsite rental car facility and the nearby Georgia International Convention Center (GICC).

The feasibility study now underway could include proposals to add SkyTrain-type service from the convention center to the busy Camp Creek Parkway corridor, to the corporate headquarters for Porsche and Delta Airlines and to a new, 320-acre, mixed-use development that will be adjacent to Hartsfield-Jackson in the City of College Park called “Airport City.”

Extending the SkyTrain along Camp Creek to the west and Delta HQ & Porsche HQ / Downtown Hapeville to the east would be pretty brilliant.
