I have a son who is three years old and goes to daycare at the Elaine Clark Center in North DeKalb because he has some developmental delays. None of his delays are cognitive, but he was a late walker and definitely has physical problems due to hypotonia. He receives physical therapy and speech therapy once a week. He has an April birthday, and I'm thinking about holding him back to start kindergarten at six instead of five. I assume that would make him ineligible for public pre-K, but do I have to go private for kindergarten as well? The set up at the Clark Center is really good because he can receive his therapies right there, so I don't want him to start pre-K next year. And just in case he's still having it by the time he's five I'd still like to hold him back. Can you do that in DeKalb county? Is there some type of waiver we would need?

Compulsory education doesn't begin until age 6 in GA, so I'm sure you'll be fine. It is very common for parents to hold back kids these days, especially little boys.

No waiver is necessary, but because he has special needs, you may be able to leave him at Elaine Clark for next year, and then get him into public pre-k the next. Do you think he will be eligible for an IEP when he is 5?

I think he probably will have an IEP, actually he has one now. He was evaluated at Coralwood and receives speech therapy through them. They don't provide physical therapy, of course, but he gets that through a private provider. He was with Babies Can't Wait and then transitioned to DeKalb for services through an IEP.

We love the Clark Center and definitely want him to have another year there, those people are amazing. It would be great if he could go from there to Pre-K at 5 and then kindergarten at 6.

As I understand it, to do this your child would not be in a lottery funded pre-k class, but rather a special ed one. Often these are not inclusive, but occasionally they are. You would need to work this out in his IEP.

Do not let them take away his IEP until he has at least a year of kindergarten under his belt and you can have a true measure of how he is doing in real school.

Okay, I'll be sure to watch that very closely. Coralwood's evaluators actually diagnosed him with autism, but the private psychologist we hired did not. According to the psychologist we hired there is a tendency to misdiagnose kids that haven't been in daycare and don't have that level of socialization. I have no idea which one is right, but I haven't told Coralwood about that though, because I do want to hold on to that IEP as long as I can.

Welcome back, Roslyn!

Hope you're able to find a choice that works best for your son.

You shouldn't hold him back. Just send him on time, and if it turns out it was a mistake, you can just hold him back later. You can't say the same thing if you send him late and that turns out to be a mistake. And besides, holding him back could get him a bad reputation, and you don't want that. And he probably won't enjoy graduating at 19. Trust me, I got a lot of heat for being held back, and I'm an October birthday. Just imagine how it would be for an April birthday.

Just a reminder to check the dates on the threads. This one is about a year old, so a response may not make sense...
