Atlanta's Safest Neighborhoods, About.com

Quote:
Taking a closer look an intown Atlanta, the safest neighborhoods in Atlanta are:

Buckhead (excluding the Lindbergh neighborhood) / Chastain Park
Brookhaven
Vinings
North Druid Hills
Virginia Highland / Druid Hills
Decatur / Avondale Estates
Underwood Hills / The Westside
Morningside / Ansley Park
Poncey-Highlands (excluding Little Five Points)
Candler Park / Lake Claire
Inman Park
Cabbagetown
Reynoldstown (particularly on the west side)
Grant Park / Ormewood Park
Knight Park

In comparison, the least safe neighborhoods in Atlanta, according to Trulia's map, are:

Midtown
U-Rescue Villa
Old Fourth Ward
Kirkwood
Downtown
Castleberry Hill
Washington Park
Bankhead
Edgewood
Peoplestown
East Atlanta (particularly East Atlanta Village)

Generally speaking, the Atlanta suburbs are incredibly safe, particularly in neighborhoods like Vinings, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Roswell, John's Creek and Alpharetta.

There are some pockets that show higher crime rates, though, including Duluth, Smyrna, Dunwoody/Perimeter Center and Norcross.
Don't mean to start a flame war, but I thought this was interesting because it's recent, and a few locations are in categories you might not have expected.

The article's data comes from this map: http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/At...Georgia/crime/

Midtown, Old Fourth Ward are more dangerous than many of the SW Atlanta neighborhoods? Don't believe it. Midtown has a much higher population densitiy than most neighborhoods, so by raw numbers, of course, it will have more crime.

How about instead of believing what a real estate website tells you what to think, people do research yourself and look at the APD crime map? I can tell you that Kirkwood sees a lot less crime than Virginia-Highland. That has to do with Virginia-Highland having a more active business district, which attracts criminals looking to break into cars.
APD Zone 6

That's true. Crime mainly occurs around commercial areas and in places that the crooks can easily get to by car.

Look at the spike around L5P, east of Moreland which is in Candler Park.

Are apartments more vulnerable to burglary than single family homes? Or does it just depend on the circumstances?

Higher concentration of people, it could increase the chances of petty crimes.

These crime maps appear to be just crime per square mile and not taking in the density of people in an area. I would take it with a grain of salt. Or the entire salt shaker.

Right, although I don't consider burglary petty crime. It involves not only invasion of your personal space and loss of property, but the possibility of grave personal danger.

For apartments depends on the security for the complex. Ultimate security is concierge/security person with single point of entry, and probably the worst are the garden styles where your front door is open to the outside world.
