Braves make it official, notify Atlanta they're leaving Turner Field - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Quote:
The Atlanta Braves have made it official: They are leaving the city they have called home for 50 years for Cobb County.

...

“We think this is a critical time because it allows us to begin to plan for Turner Field’s future,” Reed told Atlanta Business Chronicle in an exclusive interview.

...

The Braves still had an opportunity to renew the lease at Turner Field until next Jan. 1, an option the team might have chosen to exercise had the Braves run into construction delays that threatened the new stadium’s planned 2017 opening.

But Reed said he asked the Braves to let the city know of their plans before next Jan. 1, if possible, so the city could begin planning what to do with the site. He said the Braves wanted to wait until the court decision on the bonds before making a final decision on the lease.

“We are very appreciative of the Braves for giving us early notice,” the mayor said.

Reed said last month the Turner Field site was among the options being considered by casino companies that have expressed an interest in downtown Atlanta. He said Thursday he has since met with representatives of two companies he declined to name.

However, the mayor continues to prefer a $300 million plan by Atlanta-based developer Carter and Georgia State University to convert the area into a mix of student housing, stores, restaurants and athletic fields.

“We couldn’t start real movement without having this notification from the team,” Reed said. “All of our focus now is going to be collaborating with and listening to the neighborhoods.”
Finally!!

Look forward to getting some movement on redeveloping this area now!

Cant wait to have them in the new stadium. Bars and restaurants all around the stadium...getting to make an entire day/night out of a Braves game. Going to be great.

Along with car dealerships, a major freeway interchange, bail bond shops, office buildings, strip malls, etc.

That would kill the expected revenue of the project and taxes for Cobb County. The taxpayers would be screwed and cuts to services or raising of property taxes.

I wish the Braves all the best in their new stadium, especially considering the organization's problems on- and off the field. And that is all I have to say about this.
