Atlanta does need a 2nd airport.

I think it should be built east of the city (East Metro) in the I-20 corridor.

DFW has a second airport and really has done wonders for the Metroplex but we are talking about two cities with a population on the verge of reaching 7 million. Atlanta is only one city and they face more significant problems like the awful traffic coming in and out of the city. That is mainly from poor planning.

Atlanta may be only one city, but the Atlanta "Metroplex" is on the verge of reaching 6 million.

There are people who still don't realize how truly big Atlanta is.

There already are a bunch of municipal airports. We just need more puddle jumper shuttle planes like they have around LA.

I doubt the DFW reason has to do with population. Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA share the same international airport for about 3-4 million people (including Southern Vermont and central to Western MA) without much incident, and I don't know how a couple more million would make a huge difference... So I imagine that the reason Dallas/Fort Worth looking for another has to do with something besides population, such as some inherent inefficiency or lack of space since it's sandwiched between two cities (and some highways) without room to grow.

But does anyone feel the way I do about going to H.J.? I can't stand the enormity and chaos of that place! It has to be over twice the size of a lot of the other metro airports.

I've traveled a lot, mostly for pleasure... to me the atlanta airport is just full of STRESS. The travelers look STRESSED, the workers... well, seem to not care.

Maybe it's because ATL serves as a big connection spot for many travelers? people are worried about their connecting flights? or maybe its because many people come to atlanta on business (do people actually vacation here?). i don't know. i've been to other airports... o'hare seems stressed as well. DFW is another airport like atlanta, but i think it's much nicer.

One thing ATL airport could use is some people-movers inside the terminals. The subway helps between terminals, but the terminals themselves are soooooo long if you have to go all the way to the end.

Yeah that sure would be nice! I've made the harrowing mad dash to D1 & D2 and C1 & C2 and numerous gates on the far ends of the E courcourse too many times! Those walks are long especially when your running late for the flight! That could be the "Lazy America" in us all!

the Atlanta Airport Authority has ~10,000 acres it has owned for years in Dawson County in anticipation of the need for a 2nd airport. Not sure what the status of that is, but you periodically hear talk of other options like the maglev train to Chattanooga that someone mentioned.

But they do already own the land.
