My initial thought is Giant Food did not do enough sales and business to pay the bills. Customers residing in the trade area were likely shopping in other trade areas for their necessities.

I thought this as well. FWIW, the people who worked in and owned the store were very nice. I actually did shop there quite a few times as it was close to my house.

I read some of the comments in the article and one of them in particular stuck out in regards to a young man stating that the owner actually let people have free food or to have credit in the store.

He also stated that if the owner would have informed the customers that he was having problems paying mortgage/lease that the customers would have helped. I agree with this. I do think people would have helped him pay if he had asked for donations.

I think a local franchise like Food Depot could seize this opportunity. They have a very good longstanding presence in metro Atlanta (their website says since 1975). I have shopped at their Smyrna, Marietta, Austell, and Riverdale locations. Their prices are very competitive with Walmart, if you can believe it, and unless you have truly exotic or gourmet tastes, it's a store where you can get almost everything you need. No self checkouts, either. You can get in and out very quickly, unlike Walmart or Kroger.

It's pretty fascinating how their business model works. No, I do not work for them--I'm just very selective about where I shop for groceries. I can't afford too much money or time, and if I can patron a smaller business, I'll do that any day over Big Corporate Grocer. Maybe give 'em a call? If it really matters to you, look up their corporate filings and try to get in touch.
