See, that is where we need those short turn-off curb lanes that arjay mentioned. Not for the bus, but as dedicated zones for Uber pick-ups and drop-offs. Periodically spaced all through the city.

Well, that would work in some places.

I've also wondered if some form of bus turnout might be helpful in places like Peachtree near Piedmont hospital. You've always got a lot of people coming and going via bus, plus major auto traffic on Peachtree and a hinky intersection at Collier.

I'll leave it to the engineers to work out the details but they can do doubt come up with workable solutions.

Is Uber going to pay for them? They got the money. Taxpayers should not be paying for stuff like that for a private, for-profit company.

We should not make it more difficult for a bus moving several more people than a SOV to operate and therefore reduce the efficiency of it.

You can't let some idealized version of "perfect" become the enemy of practical and doable.

In this location, for example, when buses stop many cars go around them. While they're stopped, they've taken away one lane of a road that's burdened with 40,000 vehicles a day. Plus the additional 10,000 or so entering from Collier.

And after stopping, the buses still have to accelerate back up to traffic speeds.

Also bear in mind that at a hospital a fair number of the riders may be elderly or have medical conditions that interference with their spryness. So a small pullout facilitates safe boarding.

Yes, if you've got a pullout, there arguably might be some slight delay as the bus re-enters traffic. But suppose you install a flashing sign that says "Motorists must yield to bus entering traffic." And back it up with a $150 fine. You'll get the occasional yahoo who refuses to yield but once people learn the rules it should be quite manageable.

Do motorist now stop at Rapid Flashing Pedestrian Beacons or even school buses for that matter?

Not always, but most do. Some are still learning about pedestrian beacons.

Are you opposed to Rapid Flashing Pedestrian Beacons and school bus stop arms because some idiots don't always comply?

I'm opposed to them at bus stops because they add an unnecessary amount of additional maintenance costs.

They would not install them at bus stops anyways as most bus stops are near or at an intersection, where traffic control devices exist. Rapid Flashing Beacons and HAWK are used for mid-block crossings.

Right, but associating them with a large number of bus stops is unnecessary.
