The closest corner of the property is almost 1/4 mile away from the river, so I certainly wouldn't call it "prime riverfront land".

That being said, I agree that this is not the place for a bus terminal. Williams Elementary school is just south down 78, and it has a huge swath of land around it. And the city likely already owns that property as it used to be public housing (I think?). Sounds like the perfect place.

I also agree that Atlanta has failed miserably on using its riverfront, leaving it almost entirely industrial, which is a complete waste of a riverfront. What warehouse or crane part supplier needs to be next to an unnavigable river? The entire area northeast of Brown Field, west of 78, north of Fulton Industrial, and across the river south of Discovery from the warehouses on the south to almost 285 on the north could make for a spectacular riverfront residential and shopping development, with pedestrian bridges across the river.

I don't care how many ticky tack condos or houses builders throw up along Oakdale or Church Rd on the Cobb County side. Anyone with sense who experiences one of those down wind days in that area will not buy a spot over there. The stench is so bad on some days that you have to roll your window up while driving down thru that area. And don't even get me started on the rodents over there and the size of the coyotes that feed on those rodents will give some of your larger breeds of dog a run for their money. I think it's a smart move by COA. That area was messed up along time ago, even before they put the projects up

Hilarious. So bacause 2 different people have the same opinion about an area we must be the same person? Is it so hard to imagine that maybe just perhaps there is some truth to what is being said?

I'm just old enough to remember when that area was nothing but landfills and industrial plants. Now all the sudden they cap the landfills and build houses on top of them it's supposed to be something else. Nope. Like with the whole Riverside "gentrification" inside COA. That hood was lower class white people back in the day and a few blocks over was Hollywood, one of the biggest traps in Atlanta back then. You think people to the northeast in Margret Mitchell and Peachtree Battle would put up with that? There is a reason that it gets a little sketch once you go south of Bolton inside COA and also why on the Cobb side south of Atlanta Rd is not as nice as the areas north of it. and it's because those areas were always down wind of the smell that came from the landfills that used to be there and the smell that still comes from the water treatment plant. Go ask the Buckhead Betty's off W Wesley and they'll tell you the same.

As much as I would love for Atlanta to have riverfront development, I doubt that will ever happen because of the **** poor treatment of the Chattahoochee River watershed especially in the immediate area of the waterway. This pushback is mostly the belief of something grand happening with the riverfront but the reality is as OldSchoolChevy said the area is stinks literally. The reuse of the old Bankhead Courts projects site would be a reasonable use of the land.

I didnt either. I see how Wayne Williams was able to kills those kids and put them in there. Did children from Bankhead Courts ever drown in the river as well? That really has me curious, but only and old school westside native would know the answers to that. Im sure regular news would never report it if that was happening.

You will notice, however, that there are many old industrial sites on both sides of the river in the area, so you cannot solely fault the Atlanta Housing Authority.
Im shocked to see that. I always thought a place like Bankhead Courts was ITP between Hollywood Rd and Marrietta Blvd. I would have never guessed it was near Fulton Industrial and the river at all. Bankhead Courts was built pre Maynard Jackson or during?

Man ive been reading your westside knowledge for a minute on here. You drop a lot of gems. Its not many people on here that goes back that far and most people from the westside would have no interest in a forum like CityData. The Wife and I have had Mableton and Austell on our radars for a home for awhile and I have heard the River was very polluted near Six Flags to Bankhead. Its very odd this part of the river was purposely destroyed while areas north of Fulton were allowed to grow. The smell you are talking about, I have never smelled it but does it come from the river itself?

Lol. Preciate it bro. I'm not even that old. Just a tad past 30. But you're right there really isn't an intown west perspective on here from anyone who isn't new to the area. I grew up hanging out all over the west and I've always been a student of history both good and bad so when the old heads used to talk I would listen. I did see the tale end of the foolishness though, groups like the Diablos, the 2nd wave of the Miami Boys, Bowen Homes 17 and Down 4 Life were still alive and well when I was jumping off the porch so to speak so I saw a little bit with my own eyes. Like the rapper Shawty Lo who died last week wasn't a rapper to me. That dude was a major street cat going back as long as I can remember. He was famous in my neck of the woods long before he ever put music out.

And I have no clue why it smells over there. Might be because the water plant right there on Bolton Rd is where they clean the water before they push it back out into the river. And if I remember correctly there used to be landfills over there. There was one on the COA side of the river and another one on the Cobb side. That's what those big green hills are over there. They just stopped dumping trash there and capped them. You can kinda tell too cuz the flies and rodents in that area are huge. You can change up all you want but the animals can still smell it cuz it's only a few feet down in the ground. And it does still smell over there from time to time. I know because I still live in the area. Lol. Overall the COA side and the Cobb side are nice areas. Especially compared to what they used to look like. I'm just a realist and I'm not going to make my section out to be more than what it is.
