Son just moved to Midtown over the weekend and is renting a studio/condo. Has minimal furnishings and belongings at this time. Suggested he get renters insurance just the same.

Can anyone recommend a company that writes policies in that area that they deal? He doesn't need a lot of coverage, at least not at this time. It's a small place, so not sure if that is a factor as well.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/input.

Back in the dark ages, I used State Farm. If his place is in a managed building, I'd bet that the onsite property manager could provide some suggestions.

It is important that you pick a policy that coveres "replacement value" and not "actual cash value". If you have something stolen and your policy only covers actual cash value they will only pay you the depreciated value which may not be enough to buy a new item.

I was burned on this when I signed up with the company my apartment complex recommended. The brochure listed "replacement value" but my actual policy only covered actual cash value. My MacBook was stolen in a burglary and the insurance only paid me for what they determined a two year old MacBook would be worth, which is much less than any new one would cost.
