I like to keep up with the news and with taxes/etc in other cities/states. For example PA passed a beverage tax so basically if you buy a soda/etc it's going to be taxed at around 30%. This is also happening in Chicago soon along with another property tax increase soon. Houston is also in debt very bad but I'm not sure what they are doing to fix their problem. I ask myself "why is this happening" and most people in those areas will blame the Democrats. Why aren't these crazy taxes in Atlanta? Is it because our state is Republican? Is it because our city is ran good regardless of what others may think? I know when Shirley Franklin was in office and when we were in a recession the city was hurting but now we have hundreds of millions of dollars in the reserve. So my question is why isn't Atlanta/Georgia having the tax/debt/pension issues as other cities/states?

For Chicago, it's the crazy salaries and pensions that are causing the tax issues. The average teacher in Illinois retires with a $1M+ pension package. Same for Fire, Police, etc.

Georgia & Atlanta have also been smartly inviting to business. More business, more jobs. More jobs creates a larger tax base, & so forth. Many of the cities in dire straits are openly hostile to business with taxes, regulations & increasingly wage & benefit requirements. They end up raising the cost of living and those who can (some, not all obviously), relocate to places with better economies and lower cost of living.

I have other issues with things he has done but Mayor Reed deserves credit for pulling off a major overhaul of our government pensions and being great at balancing the budget:
