Considering living in Riverside Community. (Sandy Springs, Roswell: houses, neighborhood, school district)

We just put an offer on a house in Riverside. We're a young couple with a young daughter. My husband works in midtown so the commute for him would be ideal. We would be moving from Roswell (if we get the house, this market is heartbreaking). Would any Riverside residents mind giving me good insight on the area? All I can focus on are the boarded up houses and graffitied businesses. Is it safe? Do you feel safe walking through the neighborhood? Do you have kids and feel safe with them running around the neighborhood? I have so many reserves but this house is just everything we want.
Where exactly is the riverside community? Is it Bolton Academy elementary school district or the Sandy Springs corridor area? The note about boarded up houses makes me think it's not Sandy Springs.
