So it's the end of the year soon, and I've been lucky enough to travel all across the country and visit many different cities. I've come to the following conclusion:

Atlanta has a vibrancy problem.

Where do you go downtown in Atlanta and see people walking around? Where do you see people going home from work and stopping by to get groceries on MARTA?

Every single place I went to this year, (Austin, New Orleans, New York, Nashville) ALL had far more activity and pedestrians than Atlanta.

They had busy, pedestrians, walking around and actually living their lives downtown.

Is this something we even care about?
Should we just give up on Atlanta ever having that?

Well that's how real downtowns work.

Sualpine, Atlanta has a number of bustling urban areas that have lots residents. Our downtown is mostly office buildings and hotels with a few condo buildings. Midtown (still high rises) is one example of what you are looking for. There's also Grant Park, VA Highlands, etc that have more of a Greenwich village feel, still urban though.

You don't even see that in downtown Manhattan. It, like most other downtowns, is a business district.

And apparently you're oblivious to what is happening in downtown Atlanta. Or more to the point, willfully ignorant.

I agree that Downtown has a vibrancy problem but it's well on the way to being fixed w/ the UA, Gulch and Newport developments.

Decatur is a closer match to what downtown should be, but is not a suitable, walkable only area. No apartments close enough to the grocery store as an example. There is also the problem that pedestrians go away after 1 or 2 in the morning.

Having come back from Manhattan just yesterday, yes it is. They have corner stores for exactly this reason.
