Georgians could soon be able to order mimosas from restaurants or buy beer from supermarkets on Sunday mornings under a proposal that has passed its first hurdle.

The Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee on Tuesday voted 6-4 in favor of Republican Sen. Renee Unterman's bill. The measure would let local voters choose whether to allow restaurants and retail stores to start selling alcohol at 11 a.m. on Sundays.

Currently, restaurants and retail stores can't sell alcohol until 12:30 p.m. on Sundays, a restriction that business groups have argued is unfair. Government-run facilities such as those operated by the Georgia World Congress Center Authority do not face the same restrictions.

Unterman's bill had initially only addressed expanding alcohol sales to restaurants, but retail stores were later added to the proposal.

I am okay with it, although I still think it's sad that there are people who can't hold out for their first drink liquor until after church lets out.

What if I'm an atheist that likes a little extra kick in my orange juice with my breakfast? #equalprotection

The best part about church is when you get to drink the priest's wine on an early Sunday morning!

I still have yet to hear a valid reason as to why this matters. People at brunch likely didn't/won't go to church anyway. Is it too much for church-goers' eyes to see people enjoying an adult drink as they drive by to or from church? It's not like it's being proposed to serve alcohol IN church. Heck, there are religious activities that take place on days other than Sundays...should alcohol not be consumed then either?

As someone who used to go to church multiple times a week, I just don't get the concern! Where's the logic?

I said I am okay with it, it's just sad that some folks can't hold out for a drink until noon.

What I think is sadder, is that via the government, people are allowed to tell other people what they can or can't put into their own bodies (and on what days and at what times of day), in this supposedly free country.
