Are there any areas in DeKalb county that are actually considered bad? (Atlanta: transplants, apartment)

I agree. If I were helping someone to find a house in a safe area, good schools, etc, Lithonia and Stone Mountain would be last on my mind...well maybe not last but who knows...maybe I lived around a bad part of Stone Mountain and that's heavily affected my judgement.

Yep, Brookhaven, Decatur, Candler Park, Lake Claire, Dunwoody, and Druid Hills = mostly ghetto.

Not to mention the Briarcliff/Lavista/Oak Grove/Embry Hills corridor (and environs). There's a lot of tall cotton out there.

The biggest problem in S DeKalb is the insane amount of renters and section 8. IF you dont care about something that is not your because you will be gone in 6 months to a year, it shows how you treat the property and area in general and that behavior carries over to the schools and retail areas.


I truly cant see what will make S DeKalb nice again, as even if DeKalb PD hired more cops, they dont pay as well as other counties, so they pretty much serve as a training ground for cops to move on to other Counties police force.


Maybe when the HOT Lanes they plan to build on 285 starting at I20 around to the perimeter over the next decade and hopefully rail line out to Stonecrest and new developments on that line, can make the area desirable again. But the schools will still be a big problem.

A major corporate relocation, or bringing a ton of high-paying jobs to that area, could do it.

Yes, what I just described seems unlikely to happen today, but you never know what the future will bring. People in Seattle never thought South Lake Union would be what it is today before Amazon came.

Agreed. The housing stock has not aged well at all which helps gives the area a rough look as well. You see this in other areas of the metro but S Dekalb seems to be such a larger area of it. The entrenched poverty in the area

SAAN, I don't know if you noticed on Hairston Road, most of the MARTA shelters have had their glasses destroyed or shattered. Same for the lighting to most of them.
