If they're really thinking Atlanta is going to ransom them out some bitcoin the reclaim their network..they better get in line.. behind MARTA.

You tech folks help me understand this better - Don't companies and municipalities back up there data very frequently? If so, why cannot they not restore from a backup?

Here's the catch though that I wonder ( this is my industry ). Were they really "hacked" or did someone click when they shouldn't have.

If it's a live/hot backup ( e.g. its continually backing up ) that usually gets encrypted too.

They can probably restore from backup, but since this is a government entity, you have to stop what you're doing for forensics purposes as any changes could easily wipe out the "fingerprints" of what occured.

Not to mention that restoring to a backup might just leave you open to attack again, if the vulnerability is still in place.
