I agree the price per employee is not significant. Most companies have some level of employee appreciation expense. And like most employers, we struggle with making sure events cater to the greatest number of employees. There is always going certain employees that don't attend anything.

There are times it is much cheaper (and equitable) to do employee appreciation events than to give out specific raises or bonuses to individual employees

I have to agree with your post, lori love. These types of activities are quite common throughout corporate America, so I'm not sure why a State University should be looked down upon for this. They, too, have to stay vigilant that their employees are happy with their jobs and that they are incentivized to perform at the highest levels. This is not a big number and appears reasonable to little ol' me.

And, Dr. Gerber ain't got nuthin' on Mayor Reed...

My brother worked in Sales for a large company for over 30 years. Their Annual Sales Conferences were large and elaborate and always in some exotic locale. The tab was upwards of $2M. He used to say, "Oh, hell, can't they just divvy it up, cut us a check and send it with a thank-you note?"

When the number is big enough, I am sure an employee would rather have the bonus. But one advantage of an employee event is that it gets all levels of employees to interact in a less formal environment outside of work which promotes teamwork.

For many employees the interaction of playing TopGolf or going to the Aquarium has a feel good component about their employer where a bonus check of $250 once a year is not going to create that feeling especially for higher paid employees.
