Starbucks plans to open a major office in Atlanta with 500 new jobs, a decision hailed as a major victory by city and state officials trying to woo another iconic Seattle-based company to plant roots in Georgia.

Starbucks plans to invest $16 million in a 85,000-square-foot facility. Invest Atlanta will grant the company up to $250,000 toward the business expansion, which is expected to have a $190 million economic impact.

State officials will likely try to leverage Wednesday’s news to send an implicit message: If Atlanta is good enough for Starbucks, it’s good enough for Amazon.

Starbucks picked a booming Midtown Atlanta market for the new site.

Damn, don't we have enough problems without more denizens of the Starbucks Cult roaming our streets?
As if the Trilateral Commission, Disney, Fox News and Area 51 weren't already keeping me awake at night.

Not a bad score at all. Not earth shattering, but also not bad.

Definitely another feather in the city's cap.

Great score Atlanta! Not a grand slam home run, but meaningful nonetheless.

Traffic just got a little worse. If Amazon comes here, houses in the city will be ~ 900k and it will take 2 hours to travel 8 miles in city. Those of you that can afford to, buy now.

How long does it usually take for for companies to post openings after an announcement like this?

Starbucks Corp. will invest $16 million in a new Atlanta regional office that will employ up to 500, according to documents from the city's economic development agency.

The redevelopment of the former "Murder Kroger" on the Atlanta Beltline is emerging as a top contender to land the expansion, according to real estate sources familiar with the discussions.

Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) will lease 85,000 square feet in Midtown city officials said during the Aug. 29 Invest Atlanta board meeting, though a location for the new regional office was not revealed.

Starbucks may be leaning toward new Midtown buildings that include the redevelopment of the former Kroger on Ponce de Leon Avenue. The site is next to Ponce City Market where neighborhoods such as Old Fourth Ward and Poncey Highland converge.

New City LLC is developing the project, which features 360,000 square feet of office space along the Atlanta Beltline's Eastside Trail. New City could not comment.

Another possibility is T3, an $80 million office building that real estate company Hines is developing at Atlantic Station.
