The new majority is notable because it reflects the south metro county’s demographic shift from about 80 percent white 40 years ago to almost 50 percent minority in 2015, according to Atlanta Regional Commission figures.

Results from Tuesday’s voting also include Republican incumbent Commissioner Gary Barham retaining his seat by defeating Democrat V. Ranae Crutches.

The most recent Census estimate appears to indicate that racial and ethnic minority residents made up about 56.3% of Henry County's population as of July 1st, 2017.

Non-Hispanic whites were still estimated to make up about 43.7% of Henry County's population as of July 1, 2017.

With Henry County's racial and ethnic minority population appearing to approach the 60% threshold, it is easy to see why the demographic makeup of the Henry County Commission has changed from 'majority-white' to 'majority-minority' in recent years.
