Ian Trenbeath was having trouble selling his three-bedroom Marietta home, so nearly six years ago he took a chance listing it for rent on a new site called Airbnb. Every year since has been profitable.

But Trenbeath said he’s keeping a close eye on the chance that Marietta could join other metro cities imposing regulations on the short-term rental business.

As Atlanta’s tourism booms, so too does the market for short-term rental stays through services like Airbnb, VRBO and HomeAway. But some city governments have tightened their grip on the services, making homeowners apply for a permit and pay taxes like a hotel or motel..."

And expect that we'll see the typical cavalcade of whining about how this company or that one is ruining things and other expressions of unjustifiable entitlement regarding a way to avoid the reasonable costs of travel after the early-adopter advantage for homesharing has worn off. We're already seeing that kind of vapid chest-beating with regard to another new economy early-adopter advantage wearing off - "cutting the cord" (streaming video) is now increasing in cost in a manner indicating its cost and that of cable television it sought to replace are converging. It is the way of things - pricing reflects value, and the value of having a comfortable place to sleep in a remote city doesn't change based on who owns the place, just like the value of watching a movie doesn't change based on who is providing access to the movie.

Prices will range from $200 per night for a one-bedroom apartment....Airbnb will have no problems competing with them if thats the starting rate for a room
