Quote:
A new coalition of cyclists is scheduled to take to DeKalb Avenue Friday morning in a slow-roving protest of the way a corridor they call dangerous is designed.

From 2009 to 2013, DeKalb Avenue saw almost 1,500 crashes and four fatalities, according to Complete DeKalb Ave., a newly formed group lobbying for “complete streets”—roads designed to cater to cyclists and pedestrians, as well as automobiles.

That’s twice the accident rate of other Atlanta streets, per the group. Their mission is to spotlight how much safer the car-congested thoroughfare can be when people—drivers, especially—slow down and share the road.

Oops, that's funny! Well, this is how you draw attention to an omission from the Renew Atlanta program...

We had nearly 100 cyclists come together for safety in numbers to safely commute to work on DeKalb Ave. Had little to none negative reactions from drivers, everyone followed the laws, and traffic continued to move.

Just wondering where they plan on doing anything like what is shown in the photo. DeKalb avenue is very narrow for almost the entirety of its length, except for the short 1/3 mile stretch around Moreland. They're showing a separated sidewalk with tree buffer, a parking lane, three travel lanes, a barrier-separated bike lane, and a planter row.

Looking at the plans closer, it looks like most of it involves two narrow travel lanes and a separated bike lane, and will involve ROW fetching for some of the wider parts. At Moreland is about the only section that would look like the image.

DeKalb is a crappy road for sure. But reducing the peak travel direction from two to one lane will probably push some traffic over to McClendon, so hopefully it's prepared to take the extra.

They have every section of the DeKalb Ave measured for width and the exact configuration for each piece in that link:

Also, think you will find support for traffic calming on McClendon too if it ends up being problem. However, these dedicated bike lanes add more total capacity to the transportation system.

I know, that's why I said "Looking at the plans closer," and then talked about that.

What could you do to it? It's already very narrow with structures and obstacles close to the road.

Doesn't mean the road will move more people. Unless suddenly 7,000 bikers a day take to the road.

McLendon is adequately sized urban, residential, intown minor collector street. The bulb outs ruined it for bicycles, as drivers try and squeeze you into the curbs. That is why you see cyclists taking the lane.
