We were married at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The pastor is Monsignor Henry Gracz - one of the nicest, most jovial, open, open-minded, coolest priests you'll ever run across. The parish itsle has at the heart of it's mission a culture of service - they have an active AIDS ministry, a soup kitcken - in short, they are a downtown church and they have a downtown mission. i think you'll love them, though - great, positive attitude, and what sems to me to be a somewhat 'jaundiced" eye toward Diocesan and Roman politics. Try Transfiguration
If you want the most progressive Catholic Church in the Archdiocese, I'd recommend
Transfiguration in Marietta. Mgsr. Pat is very progressive, and the literagy can contain everything from traditional sections to spirituals and everything in between.

My family calls Transfiguration "the donkey church".
Early on Palm Sunday, 4 or 5 years ago, we were driving past Transfiguration en route to another church (not Roman Catholic). As we approached one of the church driveways, a donkey came trotting across the lawn. We stopped our car, and as the donkey passed in front of us, a flustered looking man appeared, holding a halter and rope and running after the donkey. The pursuit continued down the road. We had to continue on our way, but we wondered how it ended.

Just wondering... why would you want to go to a church that has a jaundiced eye towards the leadership of the Catholic Church? If this priest has such a view, why doesnt he become a Protestant minister? There is enough Catholic bashing in the media, we dont need it from our own priests.
There is a difference between a progressive priest, by which I am guessing you mean more liberal on certian issues, and a downright negative priest. People should'nt have to hear jaundiced views towards our leadership in church, that should be where they go to get away from the constant media attack on Catholics.
My opinion would be to check out a church run by the Marist Order of Fathers and Brothers, they are usuaully a bit more progressive. Our Lady of the Assumption in Brookhaven would work.

Can anyone update this thread. Trying to find a forward looking priest/church in Atlanta to at least hold some kind of blessing ceremony for two Catholics who can't be married in the church b/c one is divorced.

Maybe try Father Paul Flood of St. Benedicts in Duluth. We go there and he is head priest. I don't know if he will do it or not but he would be a good one to try. Good luck to you.

I am hoping to resurrect this thread a bit. I am new to Atlanta and have lived here for 1 year and I too am searching for a progressive/liberal Catholic Church in the area in which to get married. My spouse to be is Catholic and from Latin America and I am Lutheran and from the USA and her dream is to get married in the Catholic Church. I am divorced and she was never been married. I live in Gwinnett County and appreciate any suggestions.

Consider Our Lady of Lourdes on Boulevard. But get ready for the concert after communion. Moved here ten years ago and had never seen anything like that. Diverse and quite moving performance.
