On a related note, the elitism needs to stop too. If the sound of the song or band is dominated by electric guitars and strong vocals, then it's a rock song, period.

Be all that as it may, I do see signs of encouragement for rock. I just looked at the Top 20 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart (September 14, 2019), and here are the years in which each band had their first song break through in the United States:

1. 2000
2. 2010
3. 2019
4. 2007
5. 2017
6. 2015
7. 2018
8. 1993
9. 1994
10. 2016
11. 1998
12. 2007
13. 2012
14. 2016
15. 2015
16. 2000
17. 2006
18. 2011
19. 2014
20. 2001

That's three bands in the Top 20 that broke through in the 1990s, seven that broke through in the 2000s, and 10 that broke through this decade, with 2008 being the average breakthrough year. And though I've heard more than one music enthusiast say that rock fans don't care enough about bands that have broken through since 2005, I count 14 bands in the Top 20 that have, so it appears that rock fans are beginning to embrace newer bands.

So far in 2019, there have been 15 songs that have reached #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Here are the breakthrough years for those bands:

1. 2018
2. 2015
3. 2007
4. 2012
5. 2017
6. 2000
7. 2003
8. 2010
9. 2016
10. 2007
11. 2003
12. 2018
13. 1998
14. 2010
15. 2000

That's one band out of 15 that broke through in the 1990s, six that broke through in the 2000s, and eight that broke through this decade, with 2009 being the average breakthrough year. And again, if rock fans don't care enough about bands that have broken through since 2005, then I don't see it here, because 10 out of 15 rock #1's so far this year have been by bands that have.

As for CHR, there are abnormally few legacy acts on the format today, which is a stark departure from decades past. Musicians from the 1960s and 1970s had Top 40 CHR hits all the way into the 1990s, and musicians from the 1980s had them all the way into the 2000s. This decade is abnormal in not only the absence of rock in the mainstream, but also the absence of legacy acts (as main artists, not featured) on CHR.

Ok, but compare this to every other genre on the charts like hip hop or EDM. It's night and day lol.

That's interesting. In other threads about it, people really don't like Southside, but like Bailey. Mostly due to Southside's faux-extreme-patriotism, selective-religiosity, and general lack of intelligence.

I am liking this new station. Haven't heard Billy Idol in forever but it still rocks.

Good question. I do sometimes. I have a question, too. Who goes out of their way to a city's forum just to troll it and drop-bomb one liners?

Shrug. Ok. (Not sure why its “interesting.”?)

I don’t really remember Southside saying anything along those lines — but I stopped listening to 100.5 morning show when Larry Wachs left and Bailey came in. So it has been a while.

This take exactly.

Don't get me wrong, I personally love rock. I have albums from classic to punk to thrash to just random experimental stuff. The problem is that I haven't added to this collection in about 18 years, and the same bands I grew up listening too are the only ones people still really listen to at festivals or on the radio.

To the point the guy in the video made: Rock is dying because there is no new blood or very little of it, and people are killing the genre because they are unwilling to evolve due to some misplaced idea about purity.

Take hip-hop for example of the exact opposite path. Every 5 years or so the genre completely changes in sound and direction while maintaining a pure core. The sad thing is that rock used to do this too, but everyone collectively decided in the early 2000s to just stop evolving. Or did scream emo just turn everyone off of rock?
