I don’t live in Atlanta but Buckhead from What I heard is the richest neighborhood in Atlanta I live in Dallas the Park Cities are kinda similar to Buckhead but there’s less crime in the Park Cities, there’s been a string of crimes taking place in Buckhead and I heard they might secede what do y’all think about it?

I doubt it will actually happen as the process is much more complex to secede rather than creating a new city from an unincorporated area. Removing the Buckhead tax base would kill the city overall and have a hugely negative impact on the region.

This said, crime and quality of life issues are serious problems. Just this weekend, a jogger was shot in a random driveby shooting in a neighborhood of multi-million dollars homes. Lots of crime issues around the two major malls in Buckhead, including the killing of a young girl due to random gunfire right before Christmas. Lots of street racing etc.

I think the only way forward is focus on competent city leadership - which has been sorely missing in the past years...

It's stupid and a lame excuse to cut out the rest of the city from their tax revenue.

I personally think something needs to be done about the shooting and uprising crime spree in Buckhead. Innocent bystanders are losing their lives and people seem to be very dismissive about it. I don’t think this is something that should be easily dismissed. I personally can understand Buckhead’s desire to become its own incorporated entity given everything that is happening there and there seem to be no plans to assist them in any way regarding the matters… although I feel the likelihood of Buckhead successfully seceding is pretty slim.

From the residents of the city or folks with well-informed opinions, do you think an election of Buckhead resident Mary Norwood as Mayor would stave off talks of or movements towards succession?

No. Plus, Norwood isn't running for mayor again (she's thrown her hat in for the Council District 8 seat).

I honestly don't know what kind of relationship Felicia Moore has with the APD, but I do know she has a great relationship with the residents of Buckhead. Now that Paul Howard's gone, perhaps she could be the right Mayor to turn things around. Things are definitely out of control right now and I understand the fear and desperation of Buckhead, but leaving the City isn't the answer.

Another question is whether Buckhead would be safer if they formed a new city.

Look at Brookhaven next door, which has its own police force, yet they have violent crime, too.

good points. I personally am unaware of how policing is currently being handled in Buckhead inspite of the rising crime rates. I do know alot of the criminal activity that is happening there is being caused by people who aren't really from Buckhead. While I agree there does need to be a strong presence to detur the activity, there is no guarantee that this will actually stop the behavior.
