I am looking to buy a cake for a family dinner event. I don't want a wedding cake style or a grocery store cake, but something from a local bakery that is really special and tastes like homemade! Any suggestions?

My long time local favorite by far is A Piece of Cake. Their spice cake is to die for.

International Bakery on Cheshire Bridge—is less expensive than Piece of Cake or Alon’s, and still is an independent bakery. The store and the owner might be a little less polished than some folks might like— but their cakes are good—just need to check and see if they are baking the type of cake you want. (my family likes piece of cake but sometimes their cake is dry and a little dense —but, we had their hummingbird cake this weekend and it was a hit—been getting tired of Alon’s—but their cakes are of very consistent quality—though they mess up any special lettering about half the time).
