The Busy Bee near the AUC....

Exactly what I was going to say. The people that made this place a landmark are long gone.
I agree with johnatl about the Colonnade (if you can get near it). Great cocktails in the lounge, too. This place has a long history in Atlanta...very popular with the "gay and gray".
Word of warning, though: Bring cash; they don't take credit cards.

Go to someone's house.

I'm only slightly joking here. I've had some good southern meals in restaurants, but most don't compare to some of the home cooking that I have had in the South.

SPES, if you're up for the drive (about 1 hour), I highly recommend The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle...a wonderful Southern-style buffet.

My Dad was NUTS about this place, and I have heard nothing but wonderful things about it from several people - including you!

I have yet to make it out there for this one.

I too agree re: the downfall of Mary Mac's since Mrs. Lupo's passing. I don't think it even has the same owners now.

As far as the Colonnade goes, I have never received a backrub there while dining. What I have received though IMO is some of the freshest, most well prepared food the City has to offer - both Southern, and otherwise. Think really well done comfort food, with an emphasis on Southern. The menu is actually pretty broad, with pretty much something for everyone.

I love their seafood, it's trucked in fresh daily from Charleston. Their fried okra is the best I've had, the mini corn muffins and yeast rolls are to die for, etc. This place really is authentic, down to the 1950's Country Club feel of the dining room.

I guess there's a reason they've been around since the 20's!

Honorable mention for a small, but delicious and friendly typical "meat and three" is the Collard Green Cafe. They are located at the SE corner of Shallowford Rd. & I-85 in the Publix Shopping Center. Sort of like Matthew's in Tucker, but smaller and closer to town. They have wonderful catfish if anyone has a craving!

I think the backrub reference was about Mary Mac's, not Colonnade. I've seen the woman at Mary Mac's go around, rubbing patron's backs (maybe it helps with digestion?). Never understood that. I agree it's not the best food, but I take out-of-towners there to get a tastie of sweet tea, grits, pot likker, and fried chicken.

Who doesn't like Fox Bros? I think they're great, some of the best BBQ sides I've had and the meat is darn good, too. My main complaint about Fox Bros is that they're usually crazy busy and they're also expensive. We have been there three times and we usually spend $35 - $50 including tip. That's nuts considering it's BBQ and we're just two adults and a 2 year old.

For Southern food, I like OK Cafe and, if you want a slightly more upscale but still approachable setting, Paschal's.

Default Thanks Everyone!

Wow... plenty of places to choose from, we'll have to save some for after we make the move.

Dustys... did they have a couple pigs in their motif ? That, and really good shredded BBQ sandwiches & creamy coleslaw is all we can remember from the place we used to frequent. Oh well, if it was Dustys, I guess they are not there anymore.

I do have a couple friends, native Georgians, who we will be sure to guests for a meal at their homes while we are in town.

Then there is Mellow Mushroom, Fillini's [sp?] @ L5P... on and on. Ahhhh. Can't wait!

;-)

SPES, You're coming to visit in October tp get a feel for the areas for the move in next year, correct?

Oh, yea...The Busy Bee is usually packed...The last time, I visited, school was out so it wasn't that bad...The first time, I tried to visit, the inside was packed and it was a line going outside for takeout!

Well worth the wait tho....
