I will be traveling through Atlanta on my way from Nashville to Augusta on the day before Thanksgiving. Right now it looks like I will be passing through around 5:30 or so. Obviously traffic anywhere is going to be terrible the day before Thanksgiving, but pending no major wrecks or construction (looks like they are suspending road closures for the holidays), would you locals suggest I-75 to I-20 straight through the city or take the 285 bypass? I'm hoping that enough people head out of work around lunch time so maybe traffic will be a bit lighter by 5:30. Just trying to get a feel as I haven't been through Atlanta in awhile. Thanks in advance!

I-75 to I-20 definitely. I-75 South won't be too bad except downtown, and I-20 East will only be bad for a little bit. And it's a more "scenic" route through the heart of the city...

I-285 will be bad all the way around...from I-75 to I-20! Don't do it!

Either way will be slow. You maybe little faster going 75-20 but once you hit 285 you'll crawl again.

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing that delaying my departure by a couple hours won't make much of a difference? That would put me through ATL around 7-ish...

That would probably help. Even though a lot of people will not be working tomorrow, there will still be a rush hour at the normal time, so it'd probably be best to not be in the Metro Atlanta area at 5:30...or anytime between 3:30 and 6:30, really.

My preference would be to leave Nashville at around 11 and get past Atlanta before rush hour. I realize that might not be an option for you, though.

The day before Thanksgiving, Atlanta traffic will be bad starting around 3.

Plan on returning on Saturday. If you must come back Sunday leave early. Only thing worse than the traffic getting out of Atlanta on the day before Thanksgiving is the traffic getting back in to town on the Sunday afternoon/evening after.

I will be passing back through on Sunday mid-morning, so I'm not too worried about the return trip.

I'll second aires4118 and suggest to stay away from 285. Just go straight through to 20.

Have a safe trip!
