I live in a newer highrise in Midtown and every once in a while the tap water smells like scallions or onions. Has anyone else noticed this and does anyone know why? The smell comes out of all my faucets and my shower.

I don't know why, but I have smelled the same smell when I had a house in Norcross. Have'nt smelled it here in Midtown yet.

How freaky -- we live in an older condo building in Midtown and I haven't noticed this yet. I wonder if it has something to do with the pipes used in your building? Onion showers sound unpleasant.

I was down on the club level near the pool and smelled the same odor. They must have just watered the plants down there. It doesn't happen often but is not very nice when it does.

When I lived in south Midtown, the water in my building had a chalky consistency to it. I'm pretty sure though that was due to the building being built in the 1920s though.

^That likely came from the old leaden pipes that were standard-issue in that era.
I lived at 710 Peachtree while the pipes were being changed...sadly, I couldn't stay long enough to enjoy lead-free water.

Lead in the water! I was hoping the reason wouldn't be so scary.

Have you had your water heater checked? Maybe that might have something to do with it.

Archan, don't panic!

Those other posters are talking about water with chalky consistency due to old 1920s pipes, possibly lead.

This has nothing to do with your scallion odor in a "newer" highrise. Lead pipes haven't been used by builders in a long time.

I don't think that it would be from my water heater. The smell comes with my cold water too and I also noticed the smell in the club level after they watered the plants.

Glad it's not lead in the pipes. That would really suck!
