Hi,

My kids and I are moving next week to Stone Mountain and have
made arrangements to take a temporary apartment in "The Colony
of Stone Mountain" while I look for a permanant place...

The address is 1 Chatfield Drive, 30083

I haven't seen this place other than the website and am just
wondering if anyone knows if this area is safe or not. I'm hearing
so many different things and am getting worried now.

At one time Stone Mountain was a nice area - actually a place people sought out to find a place. While there are still a few "pockets" where things are ok, overall it's one of a handful of areas that has gone downhill quite a bit over the last few years. Mostly due to teen crime (burglaries, robberies, a few muggings, etc.).

Stone Mountain PARK is a very nice place to visit - but no, I would not recommend to anyone to live in Stone Mountain CITY anymore - at least for now. Coming closer to Atlanta, there are several nicer areas in Decatur that I'm sure others on here can recommend to you.

I'm not sure when you found this site, and no offense, but you should have asked about this place long before your move so you could have made plans to rent elsewhere when arriving here and not be tied down to a lease. It's not a combat zone over there, but always plan ahead... WELL ahead, as it's hard to pack up and move a second time.

This complex is definitely not in the nicest area of Stone Mountain but it could be worse. Like Atlantagreg said it wouldn't be in a war zone but it won't be a picnic either. Areas closer to the city or north near Tucker or Dunwoody are much nicer. I would concentrate your search in these areas of the county.

Any time someone tries to tell you an entire county is a ghetto, just ignore them.

I stand by my statement. I lived in Lithonia, and while my neighborhood was nice, it was still considered hood. Of course, I would live there again, but I wouldn't live in Stone Mountain under no circumstances. I also feel Atlanta is ghetto, with the exception of the nice areas. But then, every county or city has it's good areas along with the bad areas, and Stone Mountain is definitely a bad area.
