'A new life for those bottom floors was kindled last August, when Patterson’s team began construction.

In March, the Irish pub Meehan’s — 4,300 square feet — opened on the northern side of the building’s ground floor. An even bigger restaurant, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, will flank the atrium on the south side when renovations there are complete.



After the June 5 grand opening, the atrium will host weddings, parties and corporate events, including an already-scheduled meeting of Microsoft employees. Patterson’s group is still seeking a tenant for a 50,000-square-foot area in the basement, appropriate for a museum or a permanent or traveling exhibit.'

That was an incredibly classy building. I remember when I moved here in '84, I went in there and just had that Beaver Cleaver look on my face like a hillbilly in a big city. It was a "wow" kind of place. I was sad when the rioters smashed the windows during the Rodney King riots, and soon after when the place closed for good.

I'm glad there are people with vision who stepped up to the plate to do something like this. I'm a little more of a pessimist though, as I know it will take more pieces to the puzzle to make it succeed. Simply having the Aquarium and Coke Museum nearby might help a little, but won't be enough on their own. I wouldn't as the article suggests put the GA State students in the mix, as most likely they won't be spending what little money they have in the establishments that will be going in there. It will take a commitment by the local businesses and hotels to constantly use the event space there and their workers to frequent the restaurants and shops that open, as well as the City to STRONGLY begin enforcing the anti-vagrant laws, in order for this facility to thrive and survive - and I hope it does.

It seems like a good place for many high schools to have their prom.

I'm glad this place is finally reopening, but I liked the older plan better. It may have just been a wish list, but it incorporated grocery and other shopping, plus more restaurants. I think those things would have had a stronger impact on the surrounding area than an event facility.

I've been to Meehan's. They did a nice job with their space, and I think they'll do quite well over the long term.

I have so many fond memories of this store. I worked in the Georgia Pacific building for 8 years back when Macy's was still open.

The proposal way back when that I was the most excited about was from Post Properties. They wanted to keep the store open (they were only going to charge Federated $1 in annual rent), and convert the top 5 floors to loft apartments. The telecom company outbid them by a few dollars, so Federated went went them at the time - closing the store.

Sigh.......
