Obama announces loan guarantee for Vogtle | The Augusta Chronicle

Plant Vogtle today became the inaugural recipient of a highly competitive federal loan guarantee program to stimulate the growth of renewable energy.

"This will be the first new nuclear power plant to break ground in America in decades," said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, during a White House conference call with reporters.

Earlier today, President Barack Obama announced the $8.33 billion in loan guarantees for Southern Nuclear's plan to add two new reactors to the existing plant in Burke County.

The conditional commitment is for loans that would apply to Vogtle units 3 and 4, which would go online in 2016 and 2017. The total project cost has been estimated at $14.5 billion.

I expect Burke county, Waynesboro, Hephzibah, South Richmond, Blythe, Jefferson County, Sardis, Louisville, and Mcbean to gain a good amount in population(over the next 7 years). $15 billion is alot of money.

What city/area do you think will be the most affected?

I think.....

1. Hephzibah/South Richmond

2. Waynesboro

3. Blythe

4. Sardis

5. Mcbean/Wrens

The 3,500 construction jobs will of course be temporary blue collar jobs, but many of the full time positions at a nuclear power plant are NOT some low paying manual labor jobs. Just a quick google search of the types of jobs a nuclear plant provides proves that. Here's a quick example of the types of jobs found: Computational Scientist, Nuclear Analyst, Nuclear LAR Engineer, Nuclear Civil Engineer, and Neutronic Analyst just to name a few. To me, these 800 permanent positions sound a lot more like white collar positions that will require a significant educational background as opposed to blue collar work.

Temporary in this case means 7-10 years for the construction jobs. That is a hell of a lot longer than most can be promised a job these days in a "permanent" position.

Can you see the good in anything? You must be a pain to associate with on a daily basis.

There are already a couple of million dollar homes in Hephzibah. That belong to workers at the NSA. The top-paying jobs are up there.
