La Traviata, Sagra, Vespaio/Enoteca Vespaio, Trattoria Lisinia (actually Driftwood, but nice because it's on a small vineyard)...

Kinda depends on what you are looking for, though. Those are kind of contemporary/upscale Italian. Family-style, there is Reale's in NW Austin and Milano Cafe in SW Austin (kinda cafe style), plus a lot of others that aren't so good.

Yes, indeed.

It all depends what you are used to, if your reference is St. Louis, Chicago, NY, Boston . . . well, you won't be happy.

I eat Italian food when I am up north (and I never eat Tex-Mex above Dallas!).

Otherwise, I have trained my husband well and he now cooks excellent Italian. Vespaio isn't bad and there is Manola's but . . . it just isn't the same!

Ah well, can't beat our breakfast tacos!

Yeah, sadly, Italian is not Austin's strong suit. We went to Romeos once on Barton Springs and it was god awful. It was possibly the worst Italian I've ever had, but we wanted to try something locally owned. We were spoiled having lived in the NE and surprisingly, Seattle had some decent Italian places.

I like Asti's. They have really good pasta dishes.

Ditto. I grew up on the East coast and there is nothing in Austin that can compare. Reales's is a great little neighborhood cafe in NW Austin and Mandola's has promise. I do like Siena for Tuscan style food, but I can't afford to go there often! There's another little hole in the wall restaurant in North Austin I've been meaning to try - Andiamo Ristorante It gets great reviews on Yelp, but I'm, always skeptical that Central Texans aren't qualified to know what good Italian is!

My neighbors (who hail from up north) love Ciola's but I haven't tried it.

I'm from Philly, and the closest I've found to Italian, Northeast style, is Reale's and Ciola's. However, Ciola's is in Lakeway and still allows smoking. So the food was good, but I won't go back because the smoke and smell were horrible.

I also really like Mendola's. If you are looking for more upscale Italian, some of the ones already mentioned are decent.
