I come from Oregon where we don't have sales tax. My question is if you buy a car from a private party, do you have to pay sales tax on it?

I am pretty sure that you have to pay sales tax on new cars, just not on a 'presumtive value'.

Last time we bought a new car, we paid 6.25%, so there was not 2% tax collected compared to the full 8.25%. Was that a city tax we avoided?

Default Sales tax

It this state taxing system the same if I purchase a boat from a private seller.
How does it work if you purchase it from a dealer also?
