I was told by the county tax office that my license plates and registration would cost $200 dollars, then I got to get the inspection which is $15 and then $25 for the ID, I have to pay that for 2 vehicles, I will just have to wait til my NM tags expire and go as long as possible.

I remember living in VA and the cops would do stake outs and pull people over one by one for having expired registrations and/or inspections. Here is Tx it is more of a voluntary thing where TxDOT even spends money to advertise "Check the date. Love your state." Having seen both methods I think the stick approach works better than the carrot one. Case in point is an old neighbor of mine in South Austin who had 8 year old plates from Louisiana on his Prelude; no way would this happen in many other states.

A) Those numbers sound a bit off. Two years ago(Williamson Co), our new $48K car cost less than $100 for tags(coming from GA). 2)You will need the inspection($28.75 for one last month) before anything else. Then tags, then personal license. I wouldn't go over 30 days to get it all. We were stopped twice in the first month we were here(no tickets, but we were current on all registrations, etc). Just sayin'.

By Texas law you have 30 days to get it done. It just cost me 197.00 per car for the registration and title change to Texas and about 26.00 per car for the inspection. The reason it is so expensive your first year here is the state charges a 90.00 tax to new state residents. I just got done paying the fees because I was worried about getting pulled over and on top of it my husbands tags from CA had also expired. Next week DMV, and some more money.

All this talk about tags; last year around the mid part of July, we got our California DMV renewal for our 2003 Chevy Tahoe. The fee was north of $275 and it was the straw that broke the camel's back. I called my husband as I walked from the mailbox to our front door and told him we were done. I just got the renewal from Williamson Co. and it was $56. I only wish I could have brought all my friends and family with me when we moved.
