Another Austin institution passing...

Yes, you might say the food was mediocre, prices were a little steep, and management was bad... but it *was* one of the very few 24 hour restaurants in town for a long time. And that was it's slogan -- not "best pastrami you'll ever taste!", but rather "Katz's Never Kloses".

Truthfully, most old Austin restaurants never were known for their outstanding cuisine. They were known for their funky individuality and mostly catering to college students. Real chefs wouldn't have moved to Austin in 1979, except maybe to work at 1 or 2 of the hotels. And save for a very brief stint in the 80's oil boom, there wasn't ever an "upscale crowd" which could support really good restaurants.

When it comes to management, you take the good with the bad. Given all the wee hours it was open over the past decades, including when Austin was much more of a small and sleepy town, it almost required irresponsible management to keep it open. So I can't say it was all bad.

I wasn't a regular, but anyone who has been in Austin for 20 years couldn't help but pass through once and awhile. And I'll probably float in for one more visit before it kloses.

To me, it seems like the place just opened - and we never got around to going there.
Just another recent restaurant that went under. <wink>

I haven't been to the Austin Katz's in over a decade (back when there was actual parking and none of this current West 6th nightmare). The food was always pretty mediocre, pricey, and the service sucked. I do hit the Houston Katz's run by his estranged son and their offshoot, Katz's Express, every once in a while. Service is only slightly better, but it's one of the easier restaurants to go to when doing some shopping on Westheimer.

I live near the Katz's(Katz's Express maybe) in the Portofino Shopping Center by The Woodlands in the Houston area. Walked inside once and saw the high prices and small portions of food and walked back out. I used to deliver to the Westheimer location. Never once did I try it then. Am I really missing out on anything?
