I live in the "River Lodge" apartments near River Place in the 620/2222 area. My power bill jumped, literally, $80 from last month. June usage was at about 36000 KWH and May was at about 35000 KWH. For 35000 KWH in May my bill was only around $44. For June it's $120. It's obviously a billing issue.

I called Austin Energy for an explaination and the rep tried to explain it off as an increase in power at my unit until I pointed out the difference between this month and last. He put me in for a supervisor call back sometime in the next few days.

We are not "new" to the area and have been living in the complex for almost a year and a half.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you doing any kind of 'bill leveling'? If so, then this might be the end of billing year correction or something. Also, there is a tiered price structure, although it is hard to imagine that the last 1000 kWh would be THAT much more expensive.

Nope, no bill leveling.

MBTC, I assume there is a decimal missing and that your usage is ~350 to 360 kWh? Our house uses around 1,200 kWh a month in nice weather like this . Anyway, is it only your electric portion, or did the total bill go from 44 to 120? Or is it just electricity on your bill anyway? You should be able to create a customer online account on Austin Energy - More Than Electricity and get lots for details for your bill.

Edit:
I just check our bills, and historically, we have paid 8.4 cents to 10.5 cents per kWh (the higher our usage, the higher the average rate). Anyway, even at the higher rate, that is 1100+ kWh. Seems an awful lot.

Hopefully I'll know more when the "supervisor" gives me a call back in the next few days.

Oh, and just one other possibility...if your compressor is going out, it may run constantly trying to compress your freon...that could really run up your bill.

I don't know why I didn't think about that. I had that happen in another apartment a long time ago. Could be the issue.
