Helloo everyone.
I have posted here before and in a couple other forums. So please forgive me for asking again. If anyone could help us, it would be greatly appreciated.
My family (family meaning brothers and sisters and some of our respective sons and daughters, most not) and I want to move to the Austin area. We will be looking to purchase a big chunk of land (maybe 4Ac or more) and then divide it (or is it sub-divide it?).
We wish it could be near good schools, as we still have grammar and HS age kids and a kid with special needs (autism).
Maybe near normal nescesities of a traditional family, such as shopping and the like.
In your opinion(s), (and I hope I get many responses and opinions) what is the best side of Austin to direct my search at?
We want the land to allow for us to, either build or bring housing.
Maybe I am being too naive to think that that is possible. But we have no idea how to go about it. Please help us !!
Your opinions will be appreciated.

If you need to be in Austin, try east Austin.

If you're ok with going outside of Austin, try Georgetown (more land, better schools).

What kind of jobs will the adults be working? This is a neat idea in theory, but one of the huge drawbacks of Austin is the traffic. To get that much land, you're going to have to live outside of town, which is doable, but with the economy what it is and jobs difficult to fine, the likelihood that everyone in your family (or anyone!) can find something close isn't very strong. Does this group include a lot of work from home types, or people who don't mind a commute that's 1.5+ hours each way in congested traffic? That could be what you're looking at? The schools shouldn't be a problem. Georgetown is nice. Dripping Springs has good schools.

So, basically, you're looking to build a family compound. By "bring" a house, do you mean modular or moving an existing home onto the property? (I, myself, live in an early 20th century home that was built in Hyde Park and is now on 55 acres in Williamson County, is why I ask.)

What is your price range? Are you going to be commuting to Austin, and if so, do you know whether north or south?

Based solely on the information in your post, without knowing price range or how long a commute you can live with, I'd say Leander/Liberty Hill might be a good place to look. Or in the country outside of Georgetown, probably east.

"Compound" to me has negative connotations. It would be more like "We brothers live in a big chunk of land" We help each other and pitch in for the mortgage payment and the expenses associated with the upkeep of the land.

Yes, I mean modular/manufactured home.

I would say 100-175K range. Obviously, the lower, the better.
As far as location, wherever there are good schools. North or south.

We'll leave our options open and we'll look at these places.
Thanks for the help.

Guys, thanks for your opinions and the help.
We have different occupations: I am a truck driver, my sister is a hotel maid/worker, my brother is a handy man, and on, and on and on.
So, you see, we need to be not too far off Austin. Maybe 45 minutes, 1 hr would be ok.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR INPUT !!
